A business plan is a tool used by corporations, partnerships, or private entrepreneurs to plan, organize, and strategize their business idea.  A business plan is a formal document which outlines all the key aspects of an organization such as the management team, the competition, a list of the products and services offered, the legal structure, an analysis of the market, the marketing strategy, the financial projections, and the exit strategy.  Not all people see a business plan as an absolute essential; however any individual with business education or work experience knows that a business plan is one of the most useful tools in running a business.  A company’s business plan is basically the company’s blueprint and any changes that occur in the company, those changes should be documented in the business plan.

There are a few main purposes for creating a business plan, the main reason is to attract potential investors to feel confident in your business idea and invest money to assist you with the start-up costs.  Even if the business is already running, there could be a time when the business is not doing financially well and if they apply for a loan, they will require a business plan.  A business plan is also needed when a start-up business is applying for loans from a bank.  Studies have actually shown that those entrepreneurs, who have a proper and attractive business plan written up, are more likely to get the amount of funds they require for starting up their business.  Sometimes a business will create a business plan just to have on file if needed.   Another reason a business may want a business plan written could be to define their company goals and objectives and ensure they have a definite plan and strategy in place to achieve those goals and objectives in a particular time period.  Like stated earlier, a business plan is kind of like a blueprint for you company; anytime you come across any issues or problems, you will probably turn to your business plan for solutions.  A business plan is also great for creating a road map on paper to assist guiding a business in a particular direction and keeping track of reaching your goals.

Business plans can be written for corporations, for medium or small businesses, or for individuals attempting to start their own business.  A business plan is basically taking the business idea and putting it all into a formal document to have on file.  A business plan is also great because it causes the entrepreneur to work through issues in the business plan before the issues even occur, so it promotes proactive thinking as opposed to reactive planning.  Any business executive will state that thinking and acting proactively is one of the keys to success in owning and operating a business because you never know what obstacles a business will have to face in the future.
